Volunteers in the HBF Run for a Reason

Our tribe of volunteers are the backbone of HBF Run for a Reason and play a crucial role in ensuring the event runs smoothly. This year, our volunteers are proudly supported by HBF Physio by Life Ready.

If you’re keen to support us in ensuring a fun and safe return to HBF Run for a Reason, read through the role descriptions below and register to volunteer here.

If you have any questions about the roles please email volunteer@hbfrun.com.au

Volunteering is great for your mental health, and HBF Run for a Reason is the feel-good fitness event of the season.

Types of Volunteer Roles

We have a variety of important roles ready to be filled including pre-event, on course (in the heart of the action, get ready to cheer), and at the finish line.

You’ll have the best view of the whole event from the first steps to the finish line!

Pack Collection Volunteers

Dates Required: Pre-event, Thursday 16 May - Saturday 18
Where: HBF Stadium, Mount Claremont.

If you’re a people person and don’t mind being on your feet, this role is for you. You’ll play a key role in getting participants run-ready by handing out race packs and HBF shirts. A key part of the role is answering questions about the event and problem-solving. There’s a great buzz at the pack collection - it’s a fun place to be!

City of Perth Bag Drop Volunteers

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: Perth City and event finish line.

The role of the City of Perth Bag Drop volunteers is to keep participants’ bags in order, place them in their section on a table, and when the participants return to collect their belongings – hand the bag over to the matching number. The bags are small (so no heavy lifting) just some kindness required, and a little math. It’s a fun place to interact with participants.

Start line / Finish line Volunteers

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: Event start and finish line, Perth City and Gloucester Park

This is a fun people management role, in the heart of the action. At the start line participants are corralled to the start line in their groups by coloured race bibs depending on the pace they will do the event, with slower-paced runners at the back. The finish line volunteers are responsible for encouraging participants to move through to the recovery and medal area following their finish glory.
As every participant’s finish experience is important to us. If you have a nice clear voice and love the race-day buzz and excitement, then this is for you.

Recovery Volunteers

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: Gloucester Park

This role involves refilling cups of water and fruit for the eager participants who have just finished. It’s a busy role as everyone passes through this area but equally it’s a great area to get amongst the excitement. A bit of cleaning up is required to keep the area safe and we ask everyone to keep an eye out for anyone in need of medical attention.

Medal Volunteers

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: Gloucester Park

Your role as a very important Medal Volunteer is to take the medals off their rack and put them over your arm to give to the participants as they finish their race. The medals are different for each distance, and we have up to 37, 000 participants – that’s a lot of medals! The kids get very excited receiving their medals (as do the adults) making it a super fun place to volunteer.

Aid Station Volunteers

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: On course, Perth City - Gloucester Park

If you like being out on course in the thick of things, this is for you! We have aid stations for the participants to stay hydrated along the course. The volunteers put the aid stations together and set up the cups in layers - restocking as necessary. It’s also important to keep the site clean and leave no trace of cups. The volunteers at our aid stations are also busy as the eyes of the course for lost children etc. We love our volunteers to shout out words of encouragement while on the course, especially to those who may be finding it hard. A High-five is optional, but usually welcomed.

Course Marshals

Date Required: Event Day, Sunday 19 May
Where: On course, Perth City - Gloucester Park

We have Course Marshals dotted around the course mostly in pairs. This is a role for the over 18 preferably. You will be out on the course at various points in hi vis. Your role is to be the eyes and ears of the event. You’ll make sure that it’s all flowing and keep an eye on any lost children or medical situations. You will have a set of phone numbers should you need to report anything.

Getting to the event

Parking will be limited in the CBD and there will be road closures in place. We strongly recommend that our volunteers travel by public transport.
