Crossing the line to race recovery

Print PDF
You've crossed the finish line, your heart is thumping, you're exhilarated but exhausted.

Smart recovery began the instant you finished the HBF Run for a Reason, Glow Women's Fitness Online director Michelle Hext said.

"You want to minimise the aches and pains that can be part of distance running by starting on your recovery immediately after the race," she said.

Keep walking around slowly for a little while to help the body come back to its natural state and to allow blood circulation to return to normal, Ms Hext said.

"Walking around slowly will also prevent fainting and blood pooling in the lower legs," she said.

Ms Hext advised participants in the Act-Belong-Commit 14km event to take in a sports recovery drink rather than just water while walking around.

Rev-up with interval training

Print PDF
Need to get fit, fast? Then interval training is for you. Disliked by many runners because it is so gruelling, interval training is widely used in fitness work-outs because it is so effective.

It involves fast bursts of running, followed by a recovery jog at a slower pace. Done regularly, the result is fitness, stamina and an improvement in running speed.

WEEK 6: Run for a Reason training diary

After going back and forth a lot over the past couple of weeks, my best mate Ruth told me something she really dreaded telling me. She was pulling back from the 14km and just doing the 4.5km distance in the HBF Run for a Reason race.

And even though at first I was disappointed, I soon realised what a good choice it was for her. From the beginning of our training, feet and knee trouble plagued her.
